When AI Recommends Hotels, It Cites Booking Portals — Not Hotels

We asked Google's AI 510 hotel questions across Turkey. 98% of answers cited a booking portal; booking.com alone appeared in 74%. Individual hotel websites barely surface.

When a traveller asks ChatGPT or Google's AI "what are the best hotels in Istanbul?", which sources does the AI actually trust — and do individual hotels stand a chance of being named? To answer with data, we ran 510 hotel queries across 30 Turkish destinations and 17 hotel types through Google's AI Mode and tallied every source it cited.

The result is decisive: booking portals own the AI hotel answer. 98% of answers cited at least one booking portal, with booking.com (74%), Agoda and Expedia leading — while individual hotel websites almost never appear directly. In other words, for a hotel, AI visibility runs through Booking.com, Expedia, Agoda and TripAdvisor: your ratings, photos and completeness on those platforms are what feed the AI's recommendation.

That makes hotel AI visibility very different from generic SEO. You don't win by ranking your own site — you win by being strong on the OTAs and review platforms the AI cites, and by earning mentions in the travel guides and forums it pulls from. Below is the full source breakdown, the methodology, and what hotels should do to show up when AI recommends where to stay.

Key findings

  • 98% of AI hotel answers cite at least one booking portal (Agoda, Expedia, Booking.com, TripAdvisor) — they are the backbone of AI hotel recommendations.
  • booking.com is the single most-cited source, appearing in 74% of answers.
  • Individual hotel websites rarely appear directly — to be in the AI answer, a hotel mostly has to be visible on the portals and review sites the AI trusts.
  • Google's AI Mode answered 94% of these hotel queries (vs the classic AI Overview, which usually shows nothing for them).

What this means for you

For a hotel, AI visibility runs through the portals: your Booking, Expedia and TripAdvisor presence — ratings, photos, completeness — is what feeds the AI answer.

But the portals aren't the whole story: review sentiment and mentions on guides and forums also shape who the AI names. Measure where you stand for the exact questions travelers ask.

Methodology

We generated 510 commercial hotel prompts (30 Turkish destinations × 17 hotel types — luxury, boutique, family, all-inclusive, spa and more) and sent each to Google's AI Mode (English, gl=tr) via SerpApi, tallying the cited domains across the 481 answers returned. "Booking portal" covers global and Turkish OTAs and meta-search; Google-internal hotel cards were excluded. The large, geographically spread sample keeps any single city's niche guide sites from skewing the percentages.

Frequently asked questions

Which hotels does AI recommend?

AI hotel recommendations are built almost entirely from booking portals. In our study of 510 hotel queries, 98% of answers cited a portal like booking.com (74%), Agoda or Expedia; individual hotel sites rarely appeared.

Does ChatGPT or Google AI recommend hotels from Booking.com?

Yes — booking portals (Booking.com, Agoda, Expedia, TripAdvisor) are the backbone of AI hotel answers, cited in 98% of responses. Your presence and ratings on those platforms strongly influence whether AI names your hotel.

How do I get my hotel recommended by AI?

Maximise your visibility on the portals AI trusts: complete and optimise your Booking, Expedia, Agoda and TripAdvisor listings (photos, descriptions, reviews), and earn mentions in travel guides and forums. Then track whether AI names your hotel for the queries travellers actually ask.

Do individual hotel websites show up in AI answers?

Rarely. The AI overwhelmingly cites OTAs and review platforms rather than a hotel's own site, so being strong on those third-party sources matters more than your own SEO for AI visibility.

Does AI cover hotel searches well?

Yes — Google's AI Mode answered 94% of our hotel queries with an average of 11 cited sources, even though the classic AI Overview often shows nothing for these searches.
