AI vs Google: They Don't Cite the Same Sites
For the same query, 69% of the domains an AI Overview cites are NOT in Google's organic top 10. Optimizing only for blue links leaves most of the AI answer on the table.
CiteLens Research · 48 prompts · 2026-06-21Key findings
- 69% of the domains cited in an AI Overview do not appear in Google's organic top 10 for the same query.
- The average overlap between the AI's cited sources and Google's top 10 is just 20%.
- Google's own #1 organic result is cited by the AI Overview only 52% of the time — ranking first is no guarantee of being in the answer.
What this means for you
AI visibility is a separate surface from search rankings. A page-one Google strategy does not automatically put you in the AI answer.
You need to measure and optimize the AI surface on its own terms — which is exactly what GEO (and CiteLens) does.
Methodology
For each prompt we captured the AI Overview's cited domains and the organic top-10 domains from the same SerpApi response. "Outside top 10" is the share of AI-cited domains absent from organic results; overlap is the Jaccard similarity of the two domain sets, averaged across prompts.
