When ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews or Perplexity answer a question, they don't speak from a vacuum — they cite sources. Knowing which websites AI engines cite most is the foundation of Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): if you want your brand mentioned and cited in AI answers, you first need to be present on the sources the AI already trusts. To map those sources with real data instead of guesswork, we analyzed the citations behind 474 Google AI Overviews across 126 commercial product and service categories.

The pattern is striking: AI leans heavily on user-generated content. YouTube was cited in 74% of all answers, and community platforms together (Reddit, YouTube, Quora) appeared in 84% — far more than any single news publisher or brand website. Editorial and review media such as Forbes, CNET, PCMag, RTINGS and NerdWallet form the next tier of trusted sources, and a typical AI Overview pulls from roughly 9.6 different domains at once before writing its answer.

For marketers, SEO teams and brands, this reframes the entire visibility question. Ranking your own page in Google is no longer enough to win the AI answer — being reviewed, discussed and recommended on the third-party platforms AI cites, especially YouTube and Reddit, is what actually gets your name into the response. Below is the full ranking of the domains AI cites most, our methodology, and what it means for your AI visibility and GEO strategy.

Key findings

  • YouTube is the single most-cited domain, appearing in 74% of AI Overviews — more than any traditional publisher.
  • User-generated content (Reddit, YouTube, Quora) is cited in 84% of answers, so community discussion is a primary AI source, not an afterthought.
  • Reddit alone shows up in 37% of answers, ahead of most editorial review sites.
  • The average AI Overview cites 9.6 distinct domains, so a single answer can pull from a dozen sources at once.

What this means for you

If your category is discussed on YouTube and Reddit, those mentions feed the AI directly — being present there is now a citation channel, not just social reach.

Editorial PR still matters, but a brand absent from community platforms is invisible to the sources AI trusts most. Audit where the AI pulls from for your prompts, then earn presence there.

Methodology

We sent 500 commercial "best …" prompts across 126 categories to Google and captured each AI Overview's cited sources. Domains were de-duplicated per answer; "% of answers" is the share of AI Overviews that cite a given domain at least once. Wikipedia subdomains are merged.

Frequently asked questions

What sources does AI cite the most?

In our study of 474 Google AI Overviews, YouTube was the single most-cited source (74% of answers), followed by Reddit (37%) and then editorial review sites like Forbes, CNET and PCMag. User-generated content overall (Reddit, YouTube, Quora) appeared in 84% of answers.

Does ChatGPT and Google AI cite YouTube?

Yes. YouTube was the top-cited domain in our data, appearing in 74% of AI Overviews. Video reviews, comparisons and how-to content are a major input to AI recommendations, so a strong YouTube presence directly helps your AI visibility.

Why does AI cite Reddit so often?

AI engines favour authentic, experience-based discussion, and Reddit aggregates exactly that. In our data Reddit appeared in 37% of answers — ahead of most traditional review sites — because its threads capture real user opinions the model can summarise.

How many sources does a single AI answer use?

On average, a Google AI Overview cited about 9.6 distinct domains per answer, so one response can synthesise information from a dozen different websites at the same time.

How do I get my brand cited by AI?

Be present where AI already looks: earn YouTube reviews, take part in relevant Reddit communities, get listed on the comparison and review sites in your category, and publish clearly-structured, quotable content on your own site. Then track your citation share across engines with a GEO tool like CiteLens.

Is being cited by AI the same as ranking on Google?

No. Ranking is your page's position in Google's blue links; being cited by AI is whether the engine pulls your domain (or domains that mention you) into its synthesised answer. In a companion study we found 60% of AI-cited domains aren't even in Google's top 10 — they are separate games.
