Key findings

  • YouTube is the single most-cited domain, appearing in 64% of AI Overviews — more than any traditional publisher.
  • User-generated content (Reddit, YouTube, Quora) is cited in 81% of answers, so community discussion is a primary AI source, not an afterthought.
  • Reddit alone shows up in 38% of answers, ahead of most editorial review sites.
  • The average AI Overview cites 10.4 distinct domains, so a single answer can pull from a dozen sources at once.

What this means for you

If your category is discussed on YouTube and Reddit, those mentions feed the AI directly — being present there is now a citation channel, not just social reach.

Editorial PR still matters, but a brand absent from community platforms is invisible to the sources AI trusts most. Audit where the AI pulls from for your prompts, then earn presence there.

Methodology

We sent 48 commercial "best …" prompts across 11 categories to Google and captured each AI Overview's cited sources via SerpApi. Domains were de-duplicated per answer; "% of answers" is the share of AI Overviews that cite a given domain at least once. Wikipedia subdomains are merged.
